Tags & Grouping

Organize projects with tags, colors, and list grouping in Tray Link.

Overview

Tags help you categorize projects visually and structurally. Each tag has a name and an optional color, and projects can be grouped or sorted by tag in the project list.

Assigning Tags to Projects

Open the ellipsis menu (⋯) on a project and scroll to the Tag section:

  1. Type a tag name or pick an existing tag from the chip list
  2. Choose a color from the preset palette
  3. Click Save

Tags are stored in the format name||#color (for example, work||#007AFF). Projects without a tag appear as uncategorized when grouping by tag.

Managing Tags in Settings

Open Settings and scroll to the Tags section to:

  • Edit a tag name or color — changes apply to all projects using that tag
  • Delete a tag — removes the tag from every associated project

Deleting Tags

Deleting a tag removes it from all projects that use it. This cannot be undone from the tag manager alone.

Grouping Projects

In Settings → Group projects by, choose how the project list is organized:

ModeDescription
NoneFlat list (favorites section still appears when applicable)
By TagGroups projects under tag headers; uncategorized projects appear in a separate section
By Parent FolderGroups projects by their parent directory on disk

You can also cycle grouping modes from the project list header using the grouping toggle button.

Sorting by Tag

Use the sort toggle in the project list header to sort projects alphabetically by tag name. This works independently from grouping mode.

Tag Colors in the UI

Tag colors appear in several places:

  • Tag chips next to project names in the list
  • Recent project bubbles — the bubble background and border use the tag color
  • Settings tag preview — when editing tag names and colors

If a project has no tag color, Tray Link uses a default blue accent (#007AFF).
